Hearing Hope – How our Grants Program Provides Funding for Patients

For many of our patients, the world has slowly grown quieter over the years — not because they stopped listening, but because they simply could not afford the tools they needed to hear. While the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH) offers support, they are only able to fund one hearing aid every six years, leaving many patients without the second device that is essential to balanced, functional hearing.
This year, thanks to generous donor support, the Scotland Memorial Foundation stepped in to bridge that gap.
One young man, living with moderate to severe hearing loss, struggled daily to communicate — at work, at home, and in nearly every conversation. Because of your contributions, he received two hearing aids, allowing him to fully participate in the world around him for the first time in years. He wasn’t alone.
In total, your funding provided 10 hearing aids for patients, ranging in age from 24 to 88, including a disabled gentleman, a blind woman, a patient on dialysis, and two widowed women — each of whom experienced life changing improvements in their ability to hear and connect with others.
For these patients, your donations didn’t just provide devices — they provided dignity, independence, and the joy of conversation. What DSDHH could not supply, you made possible.
Because of you, the world is a little louder, clearer, and kinder for those who need it most.
This year, our Foundation Grants program provided $121,120 for patient assistance and programs. During the year we offer 3 cycles where departments within the hospital can apply for grants to help support their patients and programs. The funds for this program are raised through our employee giving campaign – the Tartan Club and generous donors like you.

The 2025 Ritz proved to be an extraordinary evening of generosity and celebration, raising over $180,000, nearly $10,000 more than last year’s event. This milestone underscores the communities’ unwavering commitment to ensuring patients receive the care they need, regardless of financial barriers. One of the most impactful moments of the night was the Fund the Need paddle raise, which supports medications for patients who cannot afford them. In just 20 minutes, attendees contributed almost $70,000, demonstrating the power of collective compassion. Additional fundraising highlights included: • Ritz Raffle — Congratulations to Anne Hoover of Marlboro County, this year’s winner. • Silent and Live Auctions — Featuring unique items such as a handmade table by Dr. Purcell, which sold for $1,600 and was generously donated back for next year’s auction. • Wine Pull — A guest favorite that added excitement and fun to the evening. The event embraced a vibrant Havana Nights theme, complete with authentic cuisine and lively entertainment. Guests danced the night away to a new DJ and enjoyed music from Oscar’s Latin Band, which set the perfect tone for the celebration. A memorable twist occurred when the event’s ice sculpture made an unexpected stop at the Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte before arriving fashionably late. One attendee remarked, “I attend events like this often, and I’ve never seen one done so well and flawlessly.” “Every year, I’m amazed by the incredible generosity of this community,” said Misty McMillan, executive director of the Foundation. “These contributions aren’t just numbers—they represent hope, access, and dignity for patients who might otherwise go without care. We have an outstanding healthcare system, and I’m honored that our team can play a role in making sure no one is left behind.” The funds raised will help bridge critical gaps for patients who often fall through cracks of insurance or government programs. “We want to make sure everyone gets the care they need, despite where they live or their ability to pay,” McMillan added.
