Scotland Memorial Foundation celebrated the generosity and impact of its donors at the 23rd annual Highland Society event, an evening recognizing philanthropic partners whose support strengthens healthcare close to home. The program featured donor recognitions across giving societies, special awards, and an update on the Healing Begins Here Capital Campaign to expand the Scotland Cancer Treatment Center. “Tonight is about gratitude,” said Nancy Adcock, Chair of the Highland Society. “This gathering honors the friends and partners whose generosity fuels a healthier future for our community.” Guests enjoyed live music by Dos Eddies—the acoustic duo of Greg Miller (a Laurinburg native) and Mark Weathers—along with culinary offerings from Morrison Healthcare Food Service, desserts by The Blue Crayon Café, beautiful florals by Brady’s Flowers, bartending services by Dial Ventures, and the gracious hospitality of The Southern Dream venue. Philanthropy That Changes Lives In her remarks, Misty McMillan, Executive Director of Scotland Memorial Foundation, thanked donors for their transformational support. “Your generosity shows up in real moments of care—when a new mother receives lifesaving help at home, when a neighbor can finally hear with a second hearing aid, when a patient leaves the hospital with the medications they need to recover,” McMillan said. “Because of you, lives are changed every day.” In 2025, donor support helped the Foundation provide nearly $1.2 million in direct patient and program assistance across the region. When we launched our Bling Out Breast Cancer Competition, she as a breast cancer survivor and her company joined enthusiastically - mobilizing an impressive network of supporters and raising over $5,000, ultimately winning the competition. Her commitment didn't stop there. Scotland Memorial Foundation proudly announced the community phase of its Capital Campaign: Healing Begins Here during the annual Highland Society Banquet, an event dedicated to honoring the generosity of the Foundation’s supporters on February 12. The campaign aims to raise $2 million toward a $10 million expansion and renovation of the Scotland Cancer Treatment Center. This transformative project marks a significant milestone for the region’s cancer care. The expansion will add more than 8,000 square feet of new space and fully renovate the existing facility, dramatically improving comfort, privacy, and the overall experience for patients and families. “This is a project that began conceptually in 2019 and is finally coming to fruition,” said Jennifer Wilkes, Director of the Scotland Cancer Treatment Center. “Our community deserves a state-of-the-art environment that reflects the exceptional care our team already provides. These improvements will allow us to treat more patients, offer greater privacy, and create a more dignified and healing experience.” A Center Built on Vision and Determination Executive Director of Scotland Memorial Foundation, Misty McMillan, shared a story that underscores the Center’s enduring importance. “I recently learned that nearly 30 years ago, a feasibility study concluded that building a cancer center here would not be successful,” McMillan said. “But the committee and board at that time believed in this community—they believed in what was possible. They moved forward anyway, and because of that courageous decision, the Center has grown exponentially and become an essential resource for countless families.” Leadership in the Quiet Phase: Steering Committee Drives Early Success The success of the quiet phase of the campaign is due in large part to the dedication and advocacy of the Capital Campaign Steering Committee: Paul Brooks, Danny Caddell, Faline Locklear-Dial, Jim Mason, Carol McCall, Wayne Wike, and Sandra Wilkes Beginning their work with the Foundation in the summer of 2025, this group helped build momentum, inspire early donors, and cultivate key relationships. Their leadership has already contributed to raising more than $900,000 toward the campaign’s goal. “We are profoundly grateful for our Steering Committee,” McMillan said. “Their passion for expanding cancer care in our community has been instrumental in building the foundation for our public phase.” Project Enhancements Will Elevate Patient Care The expanded Scotland Cancer Treatment Center will feature: A significantly enlarged chemotherapy lab with 25 infusion chairs Private treatment bays designed for comfort and dignity New exam rooms to improve clinical flow and decrease wait times A private restroom within the infusion area A dedicated exit allowing patients to leave discreetly and comfortably following treatment These enhancements support the Center’s mission to deliver high-quality, compassionate care close to home, reducing the need for patients to travel during some of the most difficult moments of their lives. A Community Effort The Healing Begins Here Capital Campaign invites community members, businesses, and philanthropic partners to join in ensuring that exceptional cancer care remains accessible for generations to come. “Every gift—large or small—helps strengthen the future of cancer care in our region,” McMillan said. “Healing truly begins here, and it begins with all of us.”

For many of our patients, the world has slowly grown quieter over the years — not because they stopped listening, but because they simply could not afford the tools they needed to hear. While the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services’ Division of Services for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing (DSDHH) offers support, they are only able to fund one hearing aid every six years, leaving many patients without the second device that is essential to balanced, functional hearing. This year, thanks to generous donor support, the Scotland Memorial Foundation stepped in to bridge that gap. One young man, living with moderate to severe hearing loss, struggled daily to communicate — at work, at home, and in nearly every conversation. Because of your contributions, he received two hearing aids, allowing him to fully participate in the world around him for the first time in years. He wasn’t alone. In total, your funding provided 10 hearing aids for patients, ranging in age from 24 to 88, including a disabled gentleman, a blind woman, a patient on dialysis, and two widowed women — each of whom experienced life changing improvements in their ability to hear and connect with others. For these patients, your donations didn’t just provide devices — they provided dignity, independence, and the joy of conversation. What DSDHH could not supply, you made possible. Because of you, the world is a little louder, clearer, and kinder for those who need it most. This year, our Foundation Grants program provided $121,120 for patient assistance and programs. During the year we offer 3 cycles where departments within the hospital can apply for grants to help support their patients and programs. The funds for this program are raised through our employee giving campaign – the Tartan Club and generous donors like you.

The 2025 Ritz proved to be an extraordinary evening of generosity and celebration, raising over $180,000, nearly $10,000 more than last year’s event. This milestone underscores the communities’ unwavering commitment to ensuring patients receive the care they need, regardless of financial barriers. One of the most impactful moments of the night was the Fund the Need paddle raise, which supports medications for patients who cannot afford them. In just 20 minutes, attendees contributed almost $70,000, demonstrating the power of collective compassion. Additional fundraising highlights included: • Ritz Raffle — Congratulations to Anne Hoover of Marlboro County, this year’s winner. • Silent and Live Auctions — Featuring unique items such as a handmade table by Dr. Purcell, which sold for $1,600 and was generously donated back for next year’s auction. • Wine Pull — A guest favorite that added excitement and fun to the evening. The event embraced a vibrant Havana Nights theme, complete with authentic cuisine and lively entertainment. Guests danced the night away to a new DJ and enjoyed music from Oscar’s Latin Band, which set the perfect tone for the celebration. A memorable twist occurred when the event’s ice sculpture made an unexpected stop at the Ritz-Carlton in Charlotte before arriving fashionably late. One attendee remarked, “I attend events like this often, and I’ve never seen one done so well and flawlessly.” “Every year, I’m amazed by the incredible generosity of this community,” said Misty McMillan, executive director of the Foundation. “These contributions aren’t just numbers—they represent hope, access, and dignity for patients who might otherwise go without care. We have an outstanding healthcare system, and I’m honored that our team can play a role in making sure no one is left behind.” The funds raised will help bridge critical gaps for patients who often fall through cracks of insurance or government programs. “We want to make sure everyone gets the care they need, despite where they live or their ability to pay,” McMillan added.

Eat a Sub: Help a Patient Since 2013, Jersey Mike’s Subs in Laurinburg and Pembroke have raised almost $200,000 through the Scotland Memorial Foundation to support Scotland Cancer Treatment Center patients. Last year, customers eagerly stood in line to purchase their sub and helped raise over $24,000. Franchise owner Ron Gibson chose to support Scotland Cancer Treatment Center to honor his mom and dad who he lost to cancer. Since then, other family members have faced similar battles, so Ron and his family know firsthand the needs of patients seeking treatment. “Many of our patients need help with transportation, medication, wigs, and more,” said Jennifer Wilkes, director of the Cancer Center. “Jersey Mike’s financial support is vital to us providing the additional help our patients need.” The Cancer Center had 10,800 visits last year. Through donations from individuals and businesses like Jersey Mike’s, these patients were assisted with $58,000 this past year. During the month of March, customers are encouraged to donate or round up when buying their meal. On March 26, 100 percent of sales will support cancer patients. Orders can be placed by phone ahead of time. Order placed on the mobile app must be placed on March 26 to count towards the Day of Giving. “This is always such an exciting day to see all our friends and family come out to support such a worthy cause,” said Misty McMillan, executive director of the Foundation. “I’m always amazed at the smiles that are on each face while they wait in long lines. That’s true generosity.” The Day of Giving at Jersey Mike’s locations at 12280 McColl Road in Laurinburg and 409 West Third Street in Pembroke will benefit the Scotland Cancer Treatment Center. The Laurinburg location can be reached at 910-266-0013 and the Pembroke location can be reached at 910-521-4055.

Scotland Memorial Foundation and Scotland Health Care System partnered with the Scotland County Health Department to host their annual Women’s Health Event – Healthy TogetHER on February 6 at The Highlands. Over 160 women registered for the new format evening event which included local vendors, chair massages, facials, free health screenings, and more activities geared toward women and their health. Dr. Hannah Woriax, surgical oncologist, spoke to those in attendance about the importance of breast health and regular self-checkups. She also answered questions from the audience and encouraged them not to skip their mammograms. Sandra Wilkes, a registered dietitian nutritionist held a cooking demonstration and challenged women to make healthy eating choices. She warned against TikTok fad diets but instead encouraged women, as they lined up to try the freshly made cabbage soup, to find food they enjoy making it easier to maintain healthy eating habits. During the night participants could graze the spread of healthy food options including grilled chicken, pasta salad, fruits, and vegetables. Guests could also paint small art pieces which studies show help reduce stress levels. Each woman in attendance received a goodie bag with a healthy eating plate designed to aid in portion control. The first 20 women registered received a plush bathrobe. Throughout the night door prizes were given away including a Michael Kors purse from Scotland Health partners in Imaging and Mammography. “Any time you change the format of an event, you don’t always know how it will be received,” said Misty McMillan, executive director of the Foundation. “This event proved to be a success, and I think the women in attendance not only got to learn about their health but experience it.” According to McMillan, one attendee when leaving the event shared that she felt better than when she came. “That’s what it’s all about – how we can make our neighbors and communities feel better.”
